EU Gas Draws From Ukraine Storage Increase Since Early Nov

NATURAL GAS

Natural gas withdrawals from Ukraine storage by European companies has accelerated since November amid an increase in heating demand according to FT and Argus. European entities had stored about 2.5bcm of natural gas in Ukraine ahead of the winter, according to Naftogaz.

  • Net withdrawals began in early November to average around 10.7mcm/d before rising to an average of 26mcm/d until mid-December, according to Argus.
  • More than half the gas from Ukrainian storage flowed to Poland with the remainder to Moldova, Slovakia and Hungary.
  • “Ukraine is playing a key role for central and eastern Europe’s security of gas supply this winter,” said Natasha Fielding at Argus.
  • Withdrawals from gas storage in Ukraine “helps Europe to keep its domestic stockpiles high, reducing the risk of sites nearly emptying over any sustained cold in late winter”, she said.
