EU Gas Output Pressured by Higher Nuclear Availability

EU natural gas output for power generation continued to fall in November on the year, tracking the lowest November level since 2018, system data cited by Platts showed.

  • Gas-fired power generation across Europe's five biggest power markets in November fell 19% year on year, with declines led by Spain, France, Spain, Great Britain and Italy, with only German gas registering a small year on year increase.
  • The recovery of nuclear availability in France has pushed nuclear power production up by 2% compared with last year’s levels. This is despite that Germany phased out nuclear production this year.
  • Gas-fired generation costs in NW Europe for a 50% efficient gas plant for December were just below coal with a 35% efficiency at €107.86/MWh on 30 November according to Platts assessments for S&P Global Commodity Insights.
