EU Imports of South African Coal Fall to Record Low in July

South African coal exports fell to their lowest since at least 2017 in July at 3.15 mn/t, with exports meeting around a quarter of the EU thermal coal demand, data from Kpler show, cited by Montel.

  • Kpler has estimated coal exports at 3.43 mn/t in August, below the 1H average of 4.9 mn/t per month.
  • Rail maintenance at coal mines over late July and early August occurred, consultancy Afriforesight told Montel.
  • Although EU coal demand slumped amid slow power demand, renewable capacity additions and firm reserves; Belgium, France, Spain, Germany and Italy imported around 0.15 mn/t of South African coal in July.
  • Rotterdam Coal SEP 24 down 0.9% at 121.6 USD/MT at the time of writing.
