EU Imposes Sanctions on 27 Dark Fleet Ships

FREIGHT

The EU imposed sanctions on 27 ships, including 17 that have been transporting oil on behalf of Moscow, Bloomberg reported.

  • The sanctions follow similar steps taken by the UK earlier this month.
  • Among the tankers sanctioned are the Robon, which was filmed transferring Russian oil miles away from the location it signalled, and the Andromeda Star, which crashed near Denmark earlier in the year.
  • A fleet of several hundred ships has become what is known as the ‘dark fleet’, responsible for transferring Russian oil.
  • These vessels operate outside of the oversight of industry-standard providers.
  • The sanctions prevent access to European ports, as well as the ability to sell, charter, operate or crew the vessel.
