EU Minister To Discuss Suspended Funds In Brussels, Tensions Within Ruling Coalition Remain

  • Poland's EU Minister Szynkowski vel Sek is in Brussels for another round of talks on unblocking access to EU funds earmarked for Poland. Regional Policy Minister Puda told PAP that Warsaw and the European Commission are currently in the process of approving technical documents related to Poland's National Recovery Plan. Rzeczpospolita reported that Poland's ruling Law and Justice party is ready to table legislation to meet the EU's "milestones" and put it to a vote despite the opposition from junior coalition partner Solidary Poland.
  • Tensions within the ruling coalition over the optimal stance towards the EU have been brewing for some time, while Onet reports that spending cuts ordered by the Prime Minister have resulted in new tensions within the government. Law and Justice politicians told an RMF reporter that the situation in the coalition is "critical," although the dominant view remains that it will survive until the 2023 election and beyond. The ruling party is expected to instruct its MPs to defend SP leader and Justice Minister Ziobro in the mid-December no-confidence vote.
  • Poland's S&P Global Manufacturing PMI improved to 43.4 in November from 42.0 recorded in October, beating the median estimate of 43.0. According to the accompanying commentary, "the Polish manufacturing sector undoubtedly remains mired in a deep downturn, with economic uncertainty, the war in Ukraine and high inflation all serving to undermine demand, sales, and production." Still, "although a long way to go before anything like a recovery is under way, the worst of the current downturn may well be passing."
