EU Power Demand Forecast to Rise 1.7% on Year 2024

Electricity consumption in the European Union is forecasted to grow by 1.7% on the year in 2024 as economic conditions improve, with wind and solar PV generation set to exceed fossil-fired output in 2024, the IEA said.

  • The precise rate of demand growth is uncertain due to a somewhat slow economic outlook and elevated power prices compared to Covid levels, affecting the industry, the IEA said.
  • Additionally, the combined share of wind and solar PV in total electricity supply is projected to increase to 30% in 2024 and 33% in 2025, up from 26% last year – mostly due to growth in PV.
  • This is due to reduced prices of solar modules and strong policy support.
