POWER

EU power demand is still struggling to recover with consumption in the first half of this year increasing only by 1%, or 11TWh, on the year according to ICIS.

  • European power demand so far this year has struggled to recover amid sluggish industrial demand as industrial output has continued to decline year on year, while residential and commercial demand saw some increases.
  • European hydropower output has recovered strongly on the year, rising by 32TWh in the first half of this year.
  • European wind and solar PV output surged by 43TWh on the year in 1H 2024, more strongly supported by growth in solar output.
  • European nuclear generation also recovered by 9TWh year on year in the first half of this year, as improved fleet availability in France has offset nuclear closures in Germany.
  • Fossil-fuel output in Europe has declined on the year amid sluggish demand recovery, higher nuclear output, coal plant closures in Germany and rising renewables output.
  • The decline in fossil-fuel generation weighed on power sector emissions that declined by 45mn tons in 1H24.
  • Lignite output declined by 13TWh in 1H24 and hard-coal output fell by 23TWh on the year.
