EUCO Pres Confirms EU-China Summit After Call

European Council President Charles Michel tweets after this morning's call between he and Chinese President Xi Jinping: "I spoke to President Xi of China today. On EU-China relations, despite differences, dialogue remains crucial.

Agreed to hold EU-China summit and reinforce our dialogue. We addressed the situation in Afghanistan, the international community needs to stand united in calling on the Taliban to respect international obligations and ensure an inclusive government."

  • There remains significant disagreement within EU over how to tackle relations with China. Institutions favour direct EU-China talks with less involvement from member states. Larger member states have often engaged on something close to a bilateral basis with Beijing, France and Germany especially. Lithuania (something of an antagonist for Beijing within the EU given its quasi-recognition of Taiwan) has proposed that all 27 member states should have an equal part to play in talks w/China.
