Europe Gas Demand Rises But Cutbacks Remain Above 15% Target

Europe's first cold spell heading into the depths of winter is testing the resolve of countries to continue limiting gas use but gas cutbacks remain well above the EU’s 15% reduction target, analysis of consumption data shows.

  • European countries on average cut their natural gas consumption by 24% in November compared with the 2019-2021 November average, according to Reuters.
  • This was down from an average reduction of 29% in October, but both months remained well above the 15% reduction target EU countries set for the winter in response to Russian supply cuts.
  • Since mid-November consumption has surged amid colder weather, fueling demand for heating. Gas use was down 18% in the last week of November from the long-term average and preliminary data from network operators suggest consumption has picked up so far in December.
