Ex-Eskom CEO Says Respite From Loadshedding Is Thanks To Faster Diesel Burning

  • The Presidency said that South Africa will provide a new timeline for the shut-down of its coal-fired power plants in order to tap into $2.5bn of funding from the $9.3bn Just Energy Transition Partnership financed by the richest nations.
  • The Electoral Commission (IEC) dug in and said it is not to blame for the fact that several parties missed the deadline for registering election candidates. Three parties (ACT, AASD and LPSA) threatened legal action after their submissions were rejected.
  • Ex-Eskom CEO Andre de Ruyter said that the reprieve from loadshedding is due to burning diesel "at a rate of knots" and suggested that the private sector will likely largely take over electricity generation in the future.
  • Manufacturing production data for March will cross the wires at 12:00BST/13:00SAST. Consensus looks for a 0.8% Y/Y increase in non-seasonally adjusted output after a 4.1% growth in February.
