EZ Retail Sales Slowed in Jun

EZ JUN RET SALES +1.5% M/M, +5.0% Y/Y; MAY +4.1% M/M

  • EZ retail retail sales decelerated to 1.5% in Jun after rising 4.1% in May, but still marking a second successive increase.
  • Monthly sales came in slightly weaker than markets anticipated (BBG: +1.6%).
  • Food sales declined by 1.5% in Jun, showing the third successive drop, while sales of non-food products slowed to 3.4%, after rising sharply by 8.3%.
  • Fuel sales decelerated as well, easing to 3.8% following a strong reading in May at 8.5%.
  • Annual sales slowed for the second successive month in Jun to 5.0%, after jumping to 23.3% in April due to base effects.
  • Among the member states, Ireland (+9.4%), Germany and Latvia (both +4.2%) recorded the largest m/m gains, while Malta (‑3.0%), Austria (‑2.7%) and the Netherlands (‑2.4%) saw the biggest declines.
