FCDO Summons EU Charge d'Affaires Over Vaccine Ban Claim

EU-UK

The Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office has summoned the EU's charge d'affaires in the UK Nicole Mannion over the claim made by European Council President Charles Michel in a newsletter that the UK has "imposed an outright ban on the export of vaccines or vaccine components produced on their territory."

  • The UK gov't has vociferously denied this claim, which has been repeated a number of times by senior figures in EU institution and member state gov'ts.
  • Michel sought to clarify his comments, tweeting that there are "different ways of imposing bans or restrictions on vaccines", and that he was "glad if the UK reaction leads to more transparency & increased exports."
  • In this situation the EU's ambassador would usually be summoned, but given the UK has not given accreditation to the EU ambassador. Joe Barnes at the Daily Express has comments from EU officials saying 'our ambassador is not in London these days' and that, 'The UK hasn't accredited the EU representative as ambassador so that's less convenient if you want to summon him.'
