Finance Minister Marcel Discusses Tax Reform in Congress

  • Finance Minister Mario Marcel speaks before lower house of congress in the first of two sessions dedicated to tax reform proposals.
  • As a reminder, the government announced measures including tax incentives for private investment, improved access to financing, better public investment, promoting foreign direct investment and making regulations more efficient, according to a Finance Ministry statement.
    • One of the key proposals is to suspend part of copper royalties on new projects for five years.
  • Chilean political parties, excluding the far-right Partido Republicano, agreed on five points regarding the drafting of a new constitution, newspaper La Tercera reports citing lower house President Raul Soto.
  • The five points are as follows:
    • A totally new constitution will be written.
    • Constitution will be written by an elected body.
    • The elected body will have gender parity.
    • The institution will be accompanied by a panel of experts.
    • The final text will be put to a nationwide referendum with obligatory voting.
