FINANCIALS: UBS Looking At Indian Deals: Unlikely To Move Spreads

FINANCIALS

UBS (UBS: A3 develop/A-/A) is reported to be looking at partnerships in India to drive its wealth business there. We see any such deal likely remaining small and therefore unlikely to move spreads.

  • BBG is reporting that UBS is exploring a range of partnership options to help it crack the highly competitive Indian wealth management market. This could include taking a stake in a local provider to help drive a partnership.
  • UBS exited the onshore Indian market some years ago but has acquired a small local presence through the CS acquisition. It is a stated aim of the group to grow its Asian wealth management business even further, so this does appear “on message”.
  • Historically, Indian regulators have been very resistant to foreign firms buying local assets across a range of industries, not just financials. As such, we can see any deal being relatively small and therefore unlikely to impact spreads.
