Finland Aims to Ban Russian Gas Imports by Next Winter

NATGAS

Finland is aiming to ban all Russian gas imports by next winter, according to the economy ministry cited by Montel.

  • “At the same time, Finland supports the imposition of European sanctions on Russian gas in its various forms,” said Riku Huttunen, director general for energy.
  • LNG is currently supplied to Finland by its eastern neighbour despite the halt to Russian pipeline gas imports in May 2022.
  • The plan to ban Russian imports is enabled by the new EU gas and hydrogen markets legislation allowing individual member states to block imports of Russian LNG.
  • The EU aims to phase out all Russian pipeline gas and LNG imports by 2027.
  • The share of Russia gas in Finland’s gas imports has dropped from 90% before Russia invaded Ukraine to 13% in 2023.
  • The EU is considering a ban on the trans-shipment of Russian LNG amid other measures as part of a 14th package of sanctions against Russia over Ukraine.
