Finnish, Baltic July Gas Demand Marks First YoY Increase Since War

NATURAL GAS

Combined natural gas consumption from the Baltic States and Finland rose by 1% year on year in July, the first increase since the start of the war in Ukraine, but Lithuania’s gas demand continues to lag levels seen in the past years amid lower demand from the ammonia industry according to Argusmedia.

  • Overall consumption in the region rose to 2.1TWh, up from 2.07TWh in July 2022.
  • Finnish consumption increased for a fourth consecutive month by 22% year on year to 900GWh in July, more than offsetting another steep drop in Lithuania.
  • Finland’s gas output declined on the year but rose for a fourth consecutive month, indicating a recovery in the country’s gas use.
  • Lithuania’s aggregate gas consumption continued to lag last year’s levels as the country’s largest industrial user – ammonia producer Achema – has been running its plants below capacity. Eurochem last month said it could close its ammonia plant at Lifosa from October.
