FM Demands NATO Rescind 2008 Membership Offer To Ukraine, Georgia

RUSSIA

Wires and social media carrying reports that the Russian Foreign Ministry has demanded that NATO rescind its offer made to Georgia and Ukraine in 2008 of eventual membership of the Western-oriented defence pact.

  • The move would likely be a formality, given that no country can become a full NATO member if internal or external conflicts have not been resolved. Georgia has the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, and Ukraine has Donestk and Luhansk.
  • Comes as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen threatens Moscow with new financial and economic sanctions, as well as the toughening of existing sanctions, if the situation on the Ukrainian border is not de-escalated.
