FM Sturgeon Faces Inquiry Following Salmond Conspiracy Claims

SCOTLAND

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon faces up to six hours of questioning today in a committee hearing that could make or break her leadership.

  • Scottish Parliament committee hearing starts at 0900GMT (0400ET, 1000CET, 1700HKT) and could last for up to six hours. Link: https://www.scottishparliament.tv/channel/committe...
  • The committee is investigating the Scottish gov'ts handling of harassment complaints against former FM Alex Salmond, who in turn has alleged a conspiracy against him being conducted by Sturgeon and her close associates.
  • Yesterday, following the threat of a vote of no confidence against Deputy FM John Swinney, the Scottish gov't published various pieces of information regarding the harassment complaints procedure. One of these emails showed the Scottish gov't pursuing a legal case against Salmond despite being advised by their lawyers that it was highly likely to use, a decision that cost Scottish taxpayers an additional GBP500k.
  • If Sturgeon has been found by either the committee, or a separate inquiry, to have broken the ministerial code there will be significant pressure on her to resign after more than six years in office.
