For. Min Ahead Of UK Trip-'We Want To Intensify Germany-UK Exchanges'

The German Foreign Ministry has confirmed that Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock will visit the UK tomorrow for talks with her British counterpart James Cleverly as part of the two nations' 'strategic dialogue'. Brexit and the Northern Ireland protocol likely to feature heavily. However, German FM also keen to talk up 'intensification' of cooperation w/UK as well.

  • Ministry: "Foreign Minister Baerbock would like to set the EU’s very practical achievements...on a new footing in our relations w/UK. Along with her British counterpart, she will be attending the German-British Königswinter Conference, which will be considering a wide range of issues: defence and security policy, economic affairs and education.[...] one central issue will be the consequences of Brexit [...] In 1998, the Good Friday Agreement brought peace to Northern Ireland after over 30 years of violent conflict. Prior to her departure, Foreign Minister Baerbock emphasised once again that on no account must this peace be put in jeopardy"
  • Baerbock: "With a formalised strategic dialogue between our two countries we want to further intensify the close UK-German exchange which has accompanied me in my role as Foreign Minister since almost the very first day."
