Former PM Enrico Letta Announces Bid For PD Presidency

ITALY

Former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta has officially announced his bid for the presidency of the centre-left Democratic Party (PD) following the resignation of Nicola Zingaretti earlier this month.

  • Letta served briefly as PM from April 2013 to February 2014, coming to power after the inconclusive general election of February 2013 following the technocratic administration of Mario Monti. Letta led a 'grand coalition' gov't of the PD alongside former PM Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right People of Freedom and Monti's centrist Civic Choice. He was ousted less than a year later by new PD party head Matteo Renzi after ructions with Berlusconi and disappointment in the PD at the slow pace of economic reform.
  • Letta already has name recognition and the support of Zingaretti, who said he "I think he's the right person". However, he also carries associations with a particularly chaotic period of Italian politics and may struggle to win back voters that have shifted support to the 5-Star Movement, especially now that party has former PM Giuseppe Conte at its head.
