France Issues Greenlight For Penly Reactors

POWER

EdF received the environmental greenlight for the new nuclear reactors at Penly, which enables the utility to start works including clearing land, relocating species and others, that are scheduled to last for 3.5 years from this summer, Montel said, citing the French inter-ministerial delegation in charge of new nuclear power.

  • A separate approval from ASN, requested in August 2023, is still outstanding which will enable EdF to start works on the nuclear section. ASN expects to provide this authorisation around the end of 2026.
  • The two reactors with each 1.67GW of capacity will be build in addition to the two existing reactors at Penly.
  • The first EPR is scheduled to be commissioned by 2035-2037.
