Freight Rates on Notice After Sinking of Rubymar: Platts

FREIGHT

Traders are more optimistic on higher freight rates in March, amid the emergence of more cargoes seeking VLCCs for Persian Gulf – East route, according to Platts.

  • Platts assessed the Arab Gulf to Europe voyage for 140k mt of crude at $27.40/mt March 4, having softened from a near four-year high of $33.61/mt Feb. 1.
  • Shipping rates continue to be supported by Houthi attacks on vessels, with the recent sinking of the Rubymar bulk carrier likely to spur additional concerns which could boost freight.
  • The Rubymar sank March 2, 13 days after being attacked. It was the first ship lost since attacks began in November.
  • As the ship is just below the waterline, it may not be seen by other vessels, raising the risk of accidents, Platts said.
  • Insurance companies have also stopped offering hull and machinery cover for ship owners choosing to take the Red Sea route.
