French Net Power Exports to Switzerland Rise in August

POWER

French net power exports to Switzerland have averaged 486MW so far this month, up from 334MW in the same period in July, Entso-E data showed, amid stable nuclear generation and comfortable hydropower stocks in France.

  • French net electricity exports to Switzerland stood at 153MW for all of July.
  • Net exports on the border, however, are well below levels seen in August 2023 when flows averaged 1.45GW for the entire month.
  • The French day-ahead power base load on the Epex Spot averaged €44.05/MWh on 1-14 August, at a €1.70/MWh premium to the Swiss market.
  • French hydropower stocks last week were broadly stable on the week at 86.6% of capacity and remained comfortably above 2023 levels and the five-year average.
  • French nuclear generation averaged 39.64GW on 1-13 August, higher than the average for all of July of 38.21GW. This is despite some heat-related nuclear curtailments in France.
  • France’s hydrological balance is forecast to remain positive and is currently expected at around +2.7thTWh on 29 August according to Bloomberg.
  • In Switzerland, hydropower reserves last week rose to 83.1% of capacity as of 13 August and remained at a surplus to the five-year and long-term average, BFE data showed.
  • The Swiss hydrological balance is currently forecast to be just positive at around 16GWh on 29 August according to Bloomberg.
  • Looking forward, Swiss September power base load is trading today at €70/MWh, holding a €5.40/MWh premium to the French market at the time of writing.
  • RTE warned of cross-border limitations between 29 July and 8 September on France’s eastern borders when the value of the exports exceeds 8GW but may also lower flows with total exports below the 8GW threshold.
