French Nuclear Availability Curtailed Amid Hot Weather

ELECTRICITY

French nuclear reactor availability fell to 56% on Tuesday, down from 61% on Monday as hot weather forced to units to shut down, EdF remit data and Bloomberg calculations showed.

  • The Civaux 1 and 2 reactors, with each 1.495GW of capacity, have been forced offline in an unplanned outage on 21 August amid hot weather.
  • The 1.31GW Golfech 2 reactor also had to shut down amid hot weather until 29 August.
  • The outage at the 880MW Bugey 4 reactor has been extended by two days until 26 August. The Bugey reactors might be forced offline or operate with curtailed capacity on 26-27 August amid high temperatures forecasts for the Rhone River.
  • High temperatures for the Rhone River might also affect output at the Tricastin reactors on 26 August.
  • EdF also said it maintains its nuclear production estimates for 2023 stable at 300-330TWh. Nuclear output is forecast to reach 315-345TWh in 2024 and 335-365TWh in 2025.
