French PM Threatens UK As Fishing Spat Escalates

French Prime Minister Jean Castex, speaking in the National Assembly, has criticised the UK over its alleged breach of the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement and the subsequent EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement with regard to fishing rights.

  • Castex stated that the UK is not adhering to its fishing commitments under the terms of the deal, and that 'the behaviour of Britain cannot be allowed'. Castex threatens UK with sending the issue to the arbitration panel set up in Withdrawal Agreement.
  • Amid the ongoing energy price spike across the whole of Europe there have been some sensationalist headlines warning that France could cut off the UK from energy supplies sent across the English Channel in retaliation to the UK's fisheries activity.
  • The spat comes after the UK granted permissions to 12 French vessels to operate in UK waters out of 47 applications, an allowance criticised heavily by the French gov't.
