German Gas Demand Falls 12.8% and Back below Average in Week to June 16

German natural gas consumption in the week to June 16 fell 12.8% from the previous week and was 3.6% below the 2018-21 average, Bnetza data showed. Industrial demand fell 19.4% to reverse the surge higher seen the previous week while demand from households and small businesses was up by 17.7%.

  • Industrial gas consumption fell to 1,148GWh/d last week compared to 2023 levels of 1,054GWh and 10.8% below the 2018-21 average. Gas consumption from electricity generation is also included in the data.
  • Demand from households and small businesses also rose to 372GWh/d last week, from 213GWh/d in 2023 and 28.7% above the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas demand stood 11.3% above the 2018-21 average the week prior.
  • Natural gas inventories in Germany continue the gradual rise up to 77.31% full on June 19 from 75.54% a week earlier with injection rates closer to normal this week.
