German Gas Demand Rose 4.8% Last Week but 19.5% below 2018-21 Average

German natural gas consumption in the week to 12 May increased 4.8% from the previous week but was 19.5% below the 2018-21 average, Bnetza data showed. The rise was driven by a 5.9.% increase in industrial demand and a 1.9% increase in demand from households and small businesses.

  • Industrial gas consumption stood at 1,221GWh/d last week compared to 2023 levels of 1,114GWh and 11.0% below the 2018-21 average.
  • Demand from households and small businesses rose to 432GWh/d last week, from 470GWh/d in 2023 and 36.6% below the 2018-21 average.
  • German gas demand stood 30.6% below the 2018-21 average the week prior.
  • Natural gas inventories in Germany have risen to 69.70% full on 14 May from 67.96% a week earlier as net injections rise back above normal levels.
