German Gas Imports Plunged 32.6% YoY in 2023

Germany reduced its natural gas imports by 32.6% year on year in 2023, amid energy saving measures, milder weather and no Russian pipeline imports, Bnetza said.

  • The country imported 968TWh of natural gas last year, of which 43% came from Norway and 26% and 22% from the Netherlands and Belgium, respectively.
  • Germany’s gas demand fell by 5% on the year to 810TWh in 2023, and by 17.6% compared with the 2018-2021 average, of which households and businesses saved 16.4%, while industrial use dipped by 18.3%.
