German Gas Output for Power Generation Rose 31% YoY in 2023

German natural gas production for power generation rose 31.3% above 2022 levels last year, amid better generation margins due to lower prices and the country’s phase out of nuclear generation, Smard data by Bnetza showed.

  • Gas output accounted for 11.18% of total electricity generation last year, compared with 7.74% in 2022.
  • Lower gas prices caused hard coal to gas fuel switching in summer last year, driving gas output.
  • The German power price averaged €95.18/MWh last year, compared with €235.45/MWh in 2022.
