German Gas Output For Power Generation To Rise This Summer

German gas-fired output for power generation is likely to rise in the third quarter as gas-fired plants moved ahead coal-fired plants in the merit order according to the Argus Media Electricity Summer Outlook.

  • Third-quarter 2023 clean spark spreads for 55pc-efficient plants in Germany have consistently been positive while clean dark spreads have slipped further below zero throughout late April and across May, suggesting gas-fired generation may rebound while coal-fired output is likely to remain suppressed in the near term, it said.
  • Clean dark spreads recovered slightly in mid-June with the spike in VTP gas prices but remained below clean spark spreads, the report stated.
