German Gov't Spokesman: Merkel Holds Talks w/ Polish, Hungarian PMs

Wires reporting comments from a German gov't spokesman that Chancellor Angela Merkel held talks with the prime ministers of Hungary and Poland earlier today regarding the EU's long-term budget (the multiannual financial framework) and the COVID-19 recovery fund contained within.

  • There is the prospect that Hungary, Poland, or both could veto the budget at the Council level if they believe the 'rule of law' provisions that are in place for the disbursement of COVID-19 recovery funds unfairly penalises them.
  • Both Poland and Hungary's gov'ts have claimed that their values are compatible with other EU countries, but that they do not share the same values as the institutions of the EU.
  • Merkel, who sits as the chair of the presidency of the European Council at present, is keen to get the MFF approved swiftly to enable the disbursement of funds early next year.
