Germany to Reduce Subsidies for Energy Intensive Firms

The German government will reduce to amount of funding for the subsidies for energy-intensive firms by €600mn to €3.3bn in its 2025 budget compared to 2024 and lower its support for energy efficiency by €2.4bn to €14.3bn (KTF fund), it said, cited by BILD.

  • The energy policy spokesman for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group, Mark Helferich, has cautioned against prematurely halting funding.
  • However, the spokesman for Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) has stated that the funding for buildings and companies will “continue next year without any compromise.
  • Budget politicians from the coalition also pointed out that all funding pots in the KTF are not fully utilised, allowing for reallocation if necessary.
