Global LNG Demand and Supply to Both Rise in July: BNEF

LNG

Global LNG demand is set to rise 2% m/m in July to 32.1m, driven by higher demand from mainland China, the Middle East and South America, according to BNEF.

  • Asia’s LNG demand is forecast to fall slightly m/m with a decline from Japan, South Korea and India offsetting the rise from mainland China. China imports are supported by peak summer cooling demand despite rich hydropower generation and faltering industrial activity, while India LNG imports could be limited by the monsoon season.
  • Egypt and Kuwait demand is growing due to high temperatures and insufficient local gas production.
  • Robust gas inventories in NW Europe, expected to reach ‘tank tops’ by the end of the summer, and weak demand will limit the competition for spot cargoes with Asia.
  • Global exports will rise 3% m/m to 34.2m tons with a recovery in supply from the US and Qatar as summer maintenance ends.
  • Australia supply could reduce amid planned maintenance at several LNG plants while Altamira Fast LNG further pushed its first LNG to July.
  • Any unplanned outages and above-normal Atlantic hurricane activity may bring downside supply risks.
