Global LNG FID Activity in H1 2024 Driven by the Middle East

LNG

Global LNG FID activity remained strong in H1 2024, despite no US projects taking FID amid the regulatory uncertainty following the Biden administration export permitting pause, according to IEA.

  • The pause allows non US LNG developers to advance their projects with over 40bcm/y of LNG capacity sanctioned in H1 2024.
  • More than 80% of the volume is in the Middle East including Qatar's North Field West project, the UAE's Ruwais and Oman's Marsa LNG facility.
  • Canada's 3.3mtpa Cedar FLNG reached FID last week and Indonesia's Papua West FLNG project has awarded the construction contract.
  • The US was the driver of global LNG supply growth through 2013-2023, accounting for just over half of LNG capacity sanctioned.
  • A long non-FTA export permitting pause could negatively distort global gas market dynamics although the FERC permit for Venture Global's CP2 project is encouraging.
