Global LNG Undersupplied by 1.3m Tonnes in H2 2023: ICIS

LNG

The global LNG market is expected to be undersupplied by 1.3m tonnes across H2 2023 according to ICIS yesterday based on the August run of their ICIS LNG Global Supply & Demand Forecast.

  • Global LNG demand across H2 2023 is forecast to be 204.8m tonnes, while supply is expected to be 203.5m tonnes.
  • Weak natural gas demand and record-high storage levels have weighed on European LNG imports over the last two months and ICIS expect this trend to continue throughout August.
  • Asian demand remains weak in H2 2023 with lower demand expected in Japan and South Korea despite regional spot LNG trading at a premium to European gas hubs.
  • Chinese gas demand is expected to continue growing but below the 10-year average.
  • Current planned maintenance at Australia's 3.6mtpa Prelude LNG facility and a decline in Egypt LNG exports due to a rise in seasonal demand are weighing on the LNG supply side.
