Gov Remolona Says BSP Could Consider Rate Cut If CPI Eases Below +4% Y/Y By Oct

BSP

Wires are running comments from newly appointed Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas Governor Eli Remolona, who says that the central bank could consider cutting interest rates if inflation slows below +4% Y/Y by October.

  • Remolona notes that the June inflation outturn supports a pause in interest-rate action. If CPI eases, the BSP will consider a rate pause in August.
  • Data released in Asia hours showed that headline inflation in the Philippines eased to +5.4% Y/Y in June from +6.1% prior versus +5.5% expected.
  • The official says that the BSP is "structurally hawkish" and is not looking just at the policy rate but at the path of policy rate.
  • Remolona took office on Monday. During his first speech, he promised to maintain continuity and "build on the progress we have already made."
