Government Aims To Develop Up To Five New Lithium Projects

CHILE
  • The government announced today that it has started accepting statements of interest for lithium exploration and aims to develop up to five new projects in the country. Mining Minister Aurora Williams said that the process will last 60 days, with the government announcing which salt flats have received interest in July.
  • If more than one company expresses interest in a salt flat, there will be a tender process she said, with the government giving permits for new projects by year end. Economy Minister Grau has previously said that the goal is to develop between three and five new lithium projects.
  • The news provided little support to CLP today, which has been under pressure on the back of higher US yields and associated EMFX weakness. USDCLP is currently c.1% higher on the day at 979 and the medium-term trend condition remains bullish following last week's rebound. On the upside, a break of resistance and the bull trigger at 990.67, the Feb 26 high, would confirm a resumption of the uptrend and open 1000.00. Support to watch remains at 935.63, the Mar 15 low.
