Government to Discuss Sweden NATO Bid This Week

  • The government will discuss Sweden’s bid to join NATO at a meeting later this week, according to local television station ATV. Foreign Minister Szijjarto said earlier that ratifying the bid is a mere formality after Turkey signalled readiness to do so Monday evening. Prime Minister Orban’s cabinet will meet for a three-day session, where they may settle on a specific date for parliament to vote on ratifying Sweden’s effort to join the alliance, ATV said Tuesday, citing unidentified people in government.
  • Peace, rather than weapons, are needed in Ukraine, Prime Minister Orban said in a video posted during the NATO summit in Vilnius. "The Hungarian position which we will be representing is unchanged: it is peace, rather than weapons, that should be delivered to Ukraine," Orban said as quoted by MTI.
  • Hungary's minister of agriculture met his Turkish counterpart in Ankara and urged that the Ukraine grain export agreement be "extended and rolled out" to ensure that Ukrainian grain "can again reach southern Europe, Africa, and the Middle East through traditional routes". The grain deal is set to expire on July 17 and Russian officials have said recently there is “no basis” for extending the current deal.
