High Temperatures Create Greater Alberta Wildfire Risk

A spell of record-breaking hot weather is keeping the wildfire risk across Albertas oil sands region high. The region facesl thunderstorm risks on Monday which adds the potential for lightning strikes which could start new fires.

  • Current wildfires resulted in evacuation orders across John D'Or, Fox Lake and Garden River communities in northern Alberta over the weekend, covering close to 62,000 hectares and comprising 5,000 inhabitants.
  • No threat to oil sands production was mentioned.
