US

The US House of Representatives will shortly convene for day four of the drama to elect a speaker.

  • Yesterday, negotiations between the team of Republican leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and a group of 20 conservative Republican failed to shift the balance of voting in favour of the presumed speaker-elect who has now failed to flip a single rebel vote in 11 consecutive speaker ballots.
  • More crisis talks have been ongoing with focus today on whether McCarthy's package of incentives will enough to begin peeling off less stubborn rebels.
  • First vote will be key. If McCarthy fails to move the dial then expect the stalemate to persist into next week.
  • Note: With every concession, McCarthy is degrading the authority of the speaker's office. If there are are no early signs of compromise, how long will the ~200 Republicans loyal to McCarthy continue to stand behind him?
  • UVA Center for Politics director Larry Sabato said: "If [McCarthy] somehow wins, he’s going to be the weakest speaker in modern times, maybe ever. He has simply no power left. He’s given away the store."
