House Vote On Short-Term Government Funding Bill Expected Shortly

US

According to a schedule outlined earlier today by Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), the House of Representatives will shortly convene to hold a vote on a short-term funding bill which will avert a government shutdown on November 17.

  • Floor proceedings can be followed here: C-SPAN
  • Johnson's bill funds government agencies at current levels without changes to policy. The bill is structured within a 'laddered' framework which will allow Congress more time to consider FY24 bills but will make another stopgap measure, if needed in January, more complicated.
  • Johnson has moved the bill under suspension due to opposition from conservative Republicans. Suspension requires a two-thirds majority so Johnson will need considerable Democrat support for pass the bill.
  • Democrats are expected to vote in favour of the bill, despite a negative assessment of the ‘laddered’ funding scheme and absence of supplemental funding for Ukraine or Israel.
  • Johnson told reporters earlier today: “You gotta fight fights that you can win,” adding that he's, "done with short-term CRs."
