Houthi Attack on Container Ship Kills Two

FREIGHT

A Houthi missile strike on a container ship in Gulf of Aden killed two crew members and injured six, escalating the already febrile situation in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, according to Bloomberg.

  • The True Confidence bulk carrier was hit early March 6. The ship has since been abandoned.
  • The Houthis described the carrier as a US ship. However, the vessel is owned by a company called True Confidence Shipping and operated by Third January Maritime Ltd, of Greece, Bloomberg said.
  • The loss of life is likely to worsen the tensions in the region, leaving little hope for a near-term end to widespread diversions of ships around the Cape of Good Hope.
  • This also follows the sinking of the Rubymar in February, highlighting that the situation in the area does not appear to be improving, likely bullish for freight rates.
