HUNGARY: Hungary Makes No Progress in Addressing Rule-of-Law Concerns

HUNGARY

“The suspension of commitments from EU funds under several EU programmes and the lack of disbursements following a payment request under the Recovery and Resilience Plan persist, as no new measures have been adopted to remedy the outstanding rule of law and anti-corruption issues,” a European Commission evaluation published Thursday says.

  • The evaluation highlights several areas in which Hungary falls well short of EU standards, including corruption, bribery, political funding, and lack of media independence.
  • “Hungary is a real systemic issue for the commission about the rule of law," EU Justice Commissioner Reynders told a news conference presenting the report. "I think that's an absolute record for the rule of law report," one EU official said according to AFP.
  • The full evaluation can be found here.
