HUNGARY: Mandatory Food Price Discounts to End July

  • Mandatory supermarket discounts on certain food produce including bread, meat and milk have fulfilled the aim of pushing down inflation, and the measure will be dropped from July 1, the national economy ministry said as per MTI. The measure requiring retailers to discount food produce in a number of categories by at least 15 percent was introduced a year ago.
  • Hungary’s central bank will raise its banking countercyclical capital buffer rate to 1% from July 2025, according to decree by Deputy Governor Virag published in the government’s official gazette.
  • Hungary's GKI economic sentiment rose to -11.2 in June from -13.3 in May, according to the GKI Economic Research. Business confidence rose to -6 from -8.5 while consumer confidence rose to -26.1 from -26.9.
  • Looking ahead, the following data is scheduled for release later in the week:
    • 26/06: Q1 Current Account (Est: EUR 1786m; Prior: -EUR 561m)
    • 28/06: May Unemployment Rate: (Est: 4.4%; Prior: 4.4%)
    • 28/06: May PPI (Prior: -2.0% Y/Y)
