HUNGARY: Orban Arrives in Kyiv on Unannounced Visit to Meet Zelenskiy

  • Prime Minister Viktor Orban has arrived in Kyiv on an unannounced visit to Ukraine in what might ease tensions with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy over Budapest’s ties with Russia and efforts to stall aid to Ukraine.
  • According to Telex.hu news website, the two sides won’t be signing any formal deals or hold a joint news conference. Meanwhile the prime minister’s press chief said that the opportunity to achieve peace will be the most important topic at the talks, and that the sides will also discuss bilateral ties and topical issues, according to MTI.
  • Looking ahead, industrial production (Est: -2.1% y/y; Prior: -2.4%) and retail sales data (Est: +4.0% y/y; Prior: +3.2%) as well as preliminary trade balance figures for May will cross on Friday.
