Hungary Pushes Back Against Croatia Supply Suggestions

Hungarian officials have pushed back against European Commission recommendations that they receive oil via Croatia.

  • "Oil transit prices were raised fivefold since the outbreak of the (Ukraine) war by Croatia," Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said. "Croatia is simply not a reliable country for transit."
  • It comes as Ukraine last month enforced sanctions against Russia’s Lukoil, stopping its oil from transiting via the southern leg of the Druzhba pipeline, cutting supplies to Hungary and Slovakia.
  • Hungary has made it clear it has little intent to move away from Russian energy supplies, a move which has caused a significant rift in the EU as it seeks to enforce consistent sanctions.
