IMF Expect Mozambique LNG Project to Resume Early 2024

LNG

The International Monetary Fund expect the group led by TotalEnergies to resume work on an LNG project in Mozambique.

  • The $20 billion project has been put on hold since 2021 because of Islamic State linked violence.
  • Troops have dislodged the insurgents from towns they held and killed senior leaders. “Security conditions in the north continue to improve and the large LNG project that was stopped in April 2021 is expected to restart in early 2024,” said an IMF report on Jan 16.
  • The IMF however warned that social conditions remain fragile, even as security had improved. “Maintaining peace and stability in the region depends vitally on humanitarian assistance.”
  • TotalEnergies said last year that production would start four years after the project’s resumption.
