Immigration Overtakes Inflation As Most Important Issue For Voters

US

A Harvard CAPS-Harris poll released Monday has found that immigration has overtaken inflation as the most important issue facing the country.

  • Comes as optimism that a border security and immigration package could be released this week has deflated following comments from Senate leaders suggesting that Democrat and Republican negotiators remains at odds over presidential parole reform and appropriations for the final package.
  • The poll suggests that President Biden would benefit from a bipartisan deal on the border. It also suggests that Republicans could stand to lose support if they are seen as turning down a potential deal with Democrats.
  • The Hill reports that, “immigration skyrocketed as an issue, jumping 7 percentage points in the list compared to the previous month’s poll… 35 percent of respondents listed immigration as their paramount concern among an array of issues, with inflation in a close second, named by 32 percent of respondents.”
