SPAIN: In a move to stymie an October 1 independence referendum in Catalonia,
BBC reported Sunday that Madrid has "moved to place all policing in Catalonia
under central control to stop the disputed referendum" with "thousands of extra
police are being sent to the region to block the vote." Spanish authorities call
the latest order "justified as a way to achieve better co-ordination," while
Catalan officials see it as "unacceptable interference." In the last few weeks
Spanish authorities have seized "voting materials," imposed "fines on top
officials and arresting temporarily dozens of politicians."
