India Arrivals Support Asian LNG Imports in June

LNG

Asian LNG imports are expected to dip slightly m/m in June to 23.18m metric tons but with support from strong imports from India, according to Reuters.

  • Imports are down from 23.55m in May but up 8.9% from the 21.28m from June 2023 but with little change in arrivals to China and Japan, according to Kpler data.
  • India is set to import the second highest on record at 2.72m tons in June, compared to 2.46m in May and 1.77m in June 2023. Arrivals from the US are set for a record 960k tons compared to the previous record 580k tons from June 2021.
  • India’s first half imports of 13.71m are up from 10.44m from the same period last year boosted by a heatwave driving higher power demand and robust economic growth.
  • Strong imports from the US are likely driven by the weak demand in Europe for US cargoes and with the lower US prices than cargoes from Qatar and Australia.
  • The typically price-sensitive buyer also purchased a rare cargo from Australia in the month despite the higher recent LNG prices.
  • China is set to import 6.17m tons in June, compared to 6.19m in May and 6.20m in June 2023.
  • Japan is set to import 4.69m tons in June, compared to 4.80m in May and 4.92m in June 2023.
